KAREN—an annoying, interfering female adult, who complains about everything, officious white women ruining the party for everyone else, witches, harridans, harpies: women who dare to keep existing, speaking, and asking to see the manager, after their reproductive peak.
Sigh. The memes. The out-of-context video clips showing angry women in the worst light possible for viral effect. It’s all so tiresome. As Helen Lewis wrote in her Atlantic piece on the history of Karen, it has become a vehicle for casual sexism. Women who push back, speak up, ask questions, demand accountability receive the label Karen. We have always had pejoratives for women who speak up, who are angry, and opinionated, and in charge—bossy, nasty, hysterical. Karen has become another in a long line of sexist insults.
Social media has amplified and intensified the hatred of women and sexism thrives. Rather than address the particular issue like a grown-up, these trolls whip out their book of insults. Today Karen came out again in the rooms of Twitter. She was dressed like a pig with a Molly Ringwald vibe. It amused me, because this guy has some issues with women clearly and doesn’t seem too happy, and his insult was amusing and inspired a character.
Meet Pig Karen. She is opinionated, she dares to set boundaries and demand accountability, she dgaf about gender woo woo, and she is the poster pin-up pig for women’s rights. Pig Karen is my latest character creation and she will become a regular feature, similar to the way Pink Cat Daily is a regular feature. So, I will keep drawing her, and anyone who thinks they have a clever idea for a sassy caption can feel free to submit them to me and we will have fun making lemonade from a lemon a sexist pig threw at a woman. Get your Pig Karen merch and put on your thinking caps and give me your best one-liners for her—maybe I might use your caption in an illustration.
